Fotobook Install Problems

Linking your Facebook photo albums with WordPress would be nice, right? Of course it would.

When I found that  Fotobook promised to do just this, I was pretty excited.

While I’m sure the average Fotobook installation experience is very pleasant, I found myself struggling to complete the install. I also found very little information to help me, so here, while my memory is still fresh, are the details.

After installing the plugin and activating it, I proceeded to the Manage Albums page, intending to import my albums as per the instructions.  However, clicking on “Get Albums” resulted in the progress bar getting stuck at 33% for about 5 minutes. Finally, an error message would temporarily reveal itself:

CGI Error

The specified CGI application misbehaved by not returning a complete set of HTTP headers.

Unfortunately, I could find no mention of this error in the facebook fotobook discussion pages or anywhere else online.

After about 2 hours of randomly disabling plugins, trying again, and searching the internet, I decided to try switching my version of PHP from 4 to 5. At first, this resulted in a terrible error message indicating that many modules could be loaded. I realized that my custom php.ini file might be causing the hang up. I renamed this file to php.ini.old and viola! The albums retrieved mostly without error the second time. (I still received some strange warnings, but everything seemed to work.)  The first time, I received “Error #4″. However, trying again was fruitful.

The next problem I had was with Lightbox. I had had the Lightbox plugin installed before installing this plugin. For some reason, clicking photos opened a new tab or window. I tried disabling/reenabling the plugin. Finally, I found a note on the facebook discussion board which seemed to indicate only version 2.6.1 of the Lighbox plugin currently works with fotobook. After making the change and reenabling the plugin, everything started working.

So, hopefully, someone out there struggling with these same issues will see this post and be spared more headache.
